New Jersey Health Coverage: GetCoveredNJ or NJ FamilyCare?

New Jersey residents can use GetCoveredNJ, the state’s official Marketplace, to compare private plans and apply for financial help. NJ FamilyCare is the public coverage route for eligible Medicaid and CHIP applicants and accepts enrollment year-round. A GetCoveredNJ application also screens for possible NJ FamilyCare eligibility. Start with the official program that fits your situation, then follow its eligibility notice, document requests, and enrollment instructions; a screening result or estimate is not proof that coverage has started.

Choose the New Jersey application route first

GetCoveredNJ is New Jersey’s official Marketplace for individuals and families shopping for health insurance. Its comparison tool can help you review premiums, doctors, and estimated yearly costs before applying. Use the full application for an official financial-help result rather than treating a shopping estimate as an enrollment confirmation.

If you think you may qualify for publicly funded coverage, the state’s NJ FamilyCare information page explains the program and links to its application. NJ FamilyCare includes Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Eligibility depends on the program’s rules; different people in one household may need different coverage routes.

Ask about New Jersey Health Plan Savings

New Jersey offers its own income-based premium assistance, called New Jersey Health Plan Savings, through GetCoveredNJ. It is distinct from federal premium tax credits and from cost-sharing reductions that can lower eligible enrollees’ out-of-pocket costs. An advertisement for a low premium does not tell you what your household will actually qualify for.

GetCoveredNJ’s financial-help page explains the programs and links to its official estimate tool. Check the coverage year when comparing options: income limits, federal help, and plan prices can change. This guide does not turn a prior year’s dollar limits into a promise for a new coverage year. Complete the application and read the determination before budgeting for a plan.

Answer a few timing and household questions before sharing contact details.

Check enrollment timing with the state Marketplace

GetCoveredNJ’s enrollment page explains its annual enrollment window and Special Enrollment Periods. It lists events such as losing job coverage, marriage, pregnancy, and certain moves. For a qualifying event, the state says you usually have up to 60 days afterward to enroll or change a plan; the event, conditions, and effective date still need confirmation.

Use the current GetCoveredNJ instructions for the coverage year you need. Do not assume a federal Marketplace deadline or a date from an older article applies to New Jersey. If your coverage is ending, keep the termination notice and contact the Marketplace promptly. The national coverage-loss guide explains the broader choices to compare while you confirm the New Jersey process.

Follow through if your application points to NJ FamilyCare

The state says NJ FamilyCare enrollment is available throughout the year. GetCoveredNJ uses household and income information to assess whether you may qualify for NJ FamilyCare as well as Marketplace help, so you do not need to begin by guessing the correct income category.

A possible-eligibility result is a next step, not a coverage-start notice. Read the agency messages, respond to information requests, and confirm who in the household is being evaluated. If you already have NJ FamilyCare and receive a renewal or termination notice, use that notice’s instructions for your case; ask about a Marketplace transition before assuming a replacement plan is active.

Received an invitation after filing your New Jersey tax return?

New Jersey’s Easy Enrollment program can invite uninsured or underinsured residents to apply for coverage after they indicate interest on their state income tax return. GetCoveredNJ’s FAQ explains how invited applicants claim or access an account and complete a prefilled application.

An invitation does not itself select or activate a health plan. Follow the instructions in the notice, check the application details, and finish the eligibility and enrollment steps. If the notice includes an access code or you cannot enter an existing account, use GetCoveredNJ’s official assistance channels. Do not send the code or identity documents to an unrelated website.

After applying, check the document request before switching coverage

GetCoveredNJ may ask for evidence when application information cannot be confirmed automatically. The eligibility letter and online account explain what is needed. The state’s after-application page covers document submission and says enrollment outside the annual window may also require proof of a qualifying event.

Use the specific request and deadline in your account, submit through the official channel, and keep a receipt. Before ending an existing plan, confirm the replacement plan’s effective date and any first payment with the Marketplace or insurer. An application receipt, cost estimate, or document upload alone is not confirmation that a new policy has begun.

Find New Jersey-certified enrollment help

GetCoveredNJ offers a directory of certified assisters and registered agents or brokers who can help with enrollment at no cost to the applicant. Its local-assistance page explains how to search the official enrollment site by location or organization. Use that directory when you need help choosing the right application route or resolving a notice.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is GetCoveredNJ the same program as NJ FamilyCare?

No. GetCoveredNJ is the state Marketplace for private coverage and financial-help applications. NJ FamilyCare provides public coverage through Medicaid and CHIP for eligible applicants. The Marketplace application can also screen for possible NJ FamilyCare eligibility.

Can I apply for NJ FamilyCare outside Open Enrollment?

Yes. New Jersey says NJ FamilyCare enrollment is available year-round. That does not mean every applicant qualifies; the program reviews the household’s circumstances and sends an eligibility decision.

Does a New Jersey Easy Enrollment invitation mean I already have a plan?

No. Follow the GetCoveredNJ invitation to access an account and complete the application and enrollment process. An invitation or estimate does not establish that a health plan has started.

Can this page tell me my premium or my exact enrollment deadline?

No. Use GetCoveredNJ’s current coverage-year information, official application, and notices for the amount of help, event approval, deadline, and start date that apply to you.
